CJCA JAPAN EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMI RELIEF UPDATE
by Kevin Okabe, Chair, Relief Committee - May 10, 2011

The tragic events of March 2011 that struck Japan resulted in thousands of people being killed, thousands more listed as missing, and even more without homes or jobs to go back to. The devastation is expected to cost billions of dollars and the rebuilding process could take up to a decade.

The Calgary Japanese Community Association (CJCA) mobilized within a few days following the disaster, recruiting a volunteer force of over 200 people and a coordinating committee of 30. We have been overwhelmed by the tremendous amount of support that we have received from a very generous community and city, which have raised over $320,000 for the cause. $265,000 of these will be directed to the Canadian Red Cross, while the remainder will be provided to the direct-to-Japan charity, Peacewinds.

We are also thankful for the involvement of all of our community partners, including seniors, immigrants, performing groups, cultural groups, schools, businesses, student groups and some very dedicated individuals.

OTHER ASPECTS OF OUR STRATEGY

In addition to fundraising activities, the CJCA’s Japan Earthquake/Tsunami Relief Committee has developed a comprehensive strategy in response to the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami disaster. This strategy encompasses a number of areas, including:

1. Providing support services for those that were directly/indirectly affected by these disasters

2. Liaising with other Japanese organizations across Canada

3. Organizing events and activities to raise funds towards disaster relief efforts

4. Support or participate in fundraising events and activities organized by outside organizations

A support services committee has been established comprised of members of the community that have a professional background in this area. If anyone requires any kind of assistance with respect to medical, counseling, settlement, immigration issues or just needs somewhere to turn for help, please contact us at (403) 242-4143.
